About Beitou Hot Spring

Taiwan's first hot spring hotel was opened by a Japanese merchant named Gengo Hirata in 1896, marking the start of the island's hot spring industry. Before that time, Beitou was a frontier region between Ketagalan aboriginal and Han Chinese communities. The Ketagalan called this place "Patauw," or "sorceress," because they believed it to be inhabited by witches. It is from this word that the name "Beitou" derives. The ethnic composition of Beitou became more diverse from the Japanese occupation period onward, further enriching the local culture.

The hot spring water in New Beitou comes in three varieties—green sulfur, white sulfur, and iron oxide. The springs vary in temperature from 37 to 40 degrees centigrade and have pH values ranging from 2.5 to 6.2.
